Texas Approved a Highway With the Highest Speed Limit in the Country You know what's a good idea? People driving FASTER. --The Texas Transportation Commission just approved a plan to open a 41-mile toll road that will have the HIGHEST SPEED LIMIT in the U.S. . . . 85 miles-per-hour. --The highway will run between Austin and San Antonio. There's no word on when the construction on the road will be done. --Right now there are highways in west Texas and Utah that have 80 mile-per-hour speed limits, but America doesn't have any roads with NO speed limit, like the autobahn in Germany. --The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is against this new highway. A spokesman said, quote, "The research is clear that when speed limits go up, fatalities go up."
